We're Rebuilding a Lost Record of Our Ancestors

For more than 150 years, Bruton Town was home to families who built Greenville's early Black communities — formerly enslaved people, freedmen, veterans, mothers, fathers, elders, and community leaders.

In August 2025, the historic Bruton Town Cemetery was devastated, and many burial records were never created or preserved.

The Bruton Town Descendants Heritage Initiative is now working to reconstruct the full burial history of Bruton Town — name by name, family by family. Your information can help restore the record, reconnect families, and honor those who were laid to rest there.

Parents, grandparents, and others buried there
Oral history passed down in your family
Church, funeral home, or community connections

If you are a community witness, you may know:
